White House Issues Comprehensive Executive Order on Artificial Intelligence

Acknowledging both the potential and the challenges associated with artificial intelligence (AI), the White House has issued a 100-plus page Executive Order titled “Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence” and accompanying “Fact Sheet” summary. It is yet its most extensive policy directive concerning the development of and use of AI, and it is based on eight guiding principles that include Safety and Security, Innovation and Competition, Workforce Support, Equity and Civil Rights, Protecting the Public, Protecting Privacy, and Strengthening Global Leadership. The Executive Order also signals potential heightened regulatory requirements for AI systems in the future that could have wide-ranging implications on AI governance.
