Tax Accountant

Chinquapin is a private trust company that manages a sophisticated investment portfolio, financial reporting, tax compliance and other services for its clients. Clients include individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts and private foundations. As such, all information is highly confidential and requires a high level of attention to detail and drive for results.  We are associated with the operating business of Hallmark Cards, specifically the Charitable & Crown division, and all Chinquapin employees are really Hallmark employees.

Working on our tax team has a similar feel to working in a small public accounting firm, while at the same time offering the benefits of working for a large corporation like Hallmark. There are always new issues that offer the opportunity to learn. The Tax Accountant will work with a team of tax professionals, and learn from a variety of people of varying educational backgrounds including legal, accounting, and investment. Our tax accountant needs to bring energy, a positive attitude and a deliver results in a way that everyone says “I want to work with that person!”

The tax accountant will provide tax expertise for a variety of areas supporting Charitable and Crown operations. Clients include individuals, partnerships, corporations, trusts and private foundations.

The candidate will be accountable for the following (approximate percentage of time shown in parentheses):

• (35%) Analyze and process complex domestic and international Schedule K-1s, including:

• Initial analysis and entry of K-1s into database system

• Identification of relevant information within K-1 detail statements and disclosures

• Investigating K-1 issues, communicating with external partnership management and managing work flow

• Reconciliation between K-1s and accounting software

• (35%) Tax planning and preparation of Federal/State/Local tax returns for individuals, fiduciaries, gifts, and partnerships, which may include various Federal forms/attachments as a result of complex investment structures, e.g. Forms 926, 8865, 8621, 8938, and 8886.

• (30%) Special Projects and other duties as assigned, including:

• Research and correspondence for special projects based on issues and individual inquiries

• Preparing/updating Excel spreadsheets to analyze manage work flows and support tax return/planning process. Utilizing Excel to support the tax preparation and planning process

• Assisting with foreign account reporting

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

The following is required to be considered for this role:

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance

• 2+ years tax experience

• Experience with Microsoft Office applications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Your resume will stand out if you have:

• CPA license

• Master’s degree in accounting or tax

• Public accounting experience

• General knowledge and understanding of IRS Code, financial instruments and partnership accounting

• Family office experience (or working with high net worth individuals)

• Experience with individual, trust, partnership, tax-exempt, gift, and S-corporation taxation

• Strong technical acumen to successfully work in a variety of systems and with a variety of technologies with strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Outlook and Excel. Proactively leverages technology to work smarter and produce better results

• Experience with the following software:

• CCH Axcess/Prosystems tax preparation software

• AltaReturn accounting software

• Content Server/Livelink document storage system

• CCH AnswerConnect Tax Research software

• Detail-focused and results oriented with excellent analytical skills

• Strong “numbers sense” and ability to work with financial reconciliations and reports

• Exemplary personal leadership, including a will to win as a team, high level of personal accountability and high learning agility

• Strong interpersonal savvy and relationship building skills. Strong customer-focus and collaborative approach to work.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to effectively communicate complex material in a concise and understandable way to a variety of audiences

• Maturity to handle highly confidential information
