Senior Family Legal Counsel
CLIENT
Our client family (the “Principal” and his young adult children) is headquartered in the greater Los Angeles area.
The family’s wealth is the result of highly successful businesses, as well as a significant diverse portfolio of investment and business holdings.
OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Principal, this is a unique and exciting opportunity for a highly skilled lawyer and/or business professional who enjoys complex and diverse challenges and working with a dynamic and collaborative team of professionals. The Senior Family Legal Counsel (“SFLC”) will be a trusted advisor for the Principal and his family.
This individual will be an integral part of the Legal Team as well as the Family Financial Services Team. The Legal Team is responsible for compliance, governance, administration, reporting, risk management, and establishing and executing legal processes and rules in order to run a compliant organization. The Family Financial Services Team supports family members in executing personal objectives including investments, sales, budgeting, cash flow planning and Next-Generation Education Program. Additionally, the team provides legal direction for the management of unique assets and related insurance.
In this role, you will continue to build your career as a counselor and advocate for the next generation of family and business leaders. Your responsibilities will include providing legal advice and strategic guidance on a variety of matters including transactional due diligence, limiting or mitigating exposure to risk, and overseeing the management, negotiations, and closing of a broad range of transactions. As a strategic thought partner and risk manager, you will navigate the family through the legal aspects of transactions and operations.
The SFLC will serve as the classic “expert generalist” but through a legal lens with responsibilities spanning from direct involvement to collaborative support to quarterbacking and oversight. For the near term, this role is a sole contributor role with no direct reports, however that may change over time as the office continues to evolve.
Critical will be the “trusted advisor” role that this individual will cultivate with the Principal with a goal of serving as a key “go to” resource; sounding board; confidant; and risk manager…to make sure that the family office service model runs smoothly and effectively for the benefit of the Family.
In addition to the “trusted advisor” experience needed for this role, the Family is seeking an individual who aligns with its core values and can help to support and maintain these values. These core values include respect, honesty, integrity, loyalty, compassion, philanthropy, community engagement, continuous learning and improvement, commitment, empathy and hard work.
POSITION SUMMARY
The primary responsibilities for the SFLC will include:
- Serve as a key advisor to the Principal and his family, fostering meaningful communication regarding their goals and objectives to strategically plan for their future needs.
- Serve as a key member of and legal advisor and counselor to each of the investment teams.
- Serve as key advisor on business transactions, including acquisitions, real estate, personal assets, financings, divestitures, and joint ventures.
- Supervise and direct outside counsel on legal matters.
- Negotiate, draft and review agreements, contracts and other legal documents that minimize risks and reflect the appropriate terms and conditions.
- Deal with complex, significant matters with multiple stakeholders that cut across personal, business, legal and related areas.
- Understand and be able to contextualize the overall estate plan of the beneficiaries and the trust structure of the Trusts and Trustee.
