Family Office Controller

SUMMARY: The Controller is responsible for management of the company’s accounting operations for 50+ entities including C Corp’s, S Corp’s, Limited Liability Corp’s, Limited and General Partnerships, Trusts and Nonprofit entities. Accounting operations include accounts payable, accounts receivable, general accounting, financial reporting, fixed asset reporting, cash and debt management. This position will ensure proper internal controls are maintained, provide financial analysis to senior management, and oversee financial reviews and audits. In addition to a comprehensive knowledge of GAAP, an awareness of the laws and regulations impacting business activities and financial policies and procedures is necessary.

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all activities of the corporate accounting department, including bill payment and collections, month end close process, financial reporting, banking and cash management, preparation of tax schedules, estate planning transactions, and federal/state/local regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and maintain corporate accounting policies and procedures to ensure compliance with US GAAP and other laws/regulations. Research technical accounting issues to ensure proper accounting and reporting. As needed, oversee external audits of financial reporting and tax compliance.
  • Establish and maintain internal controls to minimize risks and safeguard assets, prevent and detect errors and fraud, ensure complete and accurate financial reporting, promote operational efficiency, and encourage adherence to policies, rules, regulations, and laws.
  • Establish and oversee periodic formal financial management review procedures.
  • Establish and maintain workpapers and schedules to ensure accurate reporting and streamline management reviews.
  • Oversee activities of outsourced tax service provider.
  • Plan and execute cash requirements and related intercompany transactions.
  • Develop operational improvements to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of organizational procedures.
  • Support executive management with financial analysis for business activities and transactions.
  • Ensure effective cross functional processes/and or structures that improve the efficiency and timeliness of financial reporting with associated entities.
  • Establish and monitor goals and priorities within the department. Mentor and develop members of the accounting team.
  • Provide ad hoc support and analysis.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field; CPA or CMA preferred
  • 5+ years of accounting management experience preferably working in a family office environment
  • 10+ years in prior roles throughout the accounting function or external audit
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting, familiarity with nonprofit accounting a plus
  • Working knowledge of federal and state taxation required, estate tax exposure a plus
  • Experience with Sage Intacct or other general ledger systems required
  • Ability to operate independently and set priorities, identify opportunities for improvement and execute on those opportunities
