Family Office Controller
Private single family office seeks a candidate with a minimum of 8 years accounting and wealth management experience to join a team responsible for handling accounting/finance for the owners and their operating businesses.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Report directly to Chief Financial Officer.
- Coordination of all accounting functions for high-net worth individuals and family owned operating businesses and their investment entities.
- Coordinate operating business accounts receivable, accounts payable and general ledger entries and maintenance.
- Work with operating business leaders to drive business results with timely/live metric based financial reporting.
- Ability to shift focus quickly between operating and nonprofit businesses in different industries and provide financial oversight and accountability to business leaders.
- Manage the personal cash flow, investment accounts and lines of credit of a private family and its properties, trusts and business entities as needed.
- Manage the operating cash flow of multiple operating and nonprofit businesses.
- Track revenue and expenses, manage vendor relations and bill pay, reconcile bank accounts and credit card activity for family, trusts and business entities.
- Management of outsourced and/or insourced bill pay staff.
- Provide reporting of cash and investment activity to stakeholders.
- Prepare financial statements for family members, properties, trusts, investment entities and business entities.
- Main liaison with multiple tax accounting firms in data collection and review of gift, individual, foundation, nonprofit corporations, partnership, trust, Scorporation and C-Corporation tax returns.
- Work regularly with external professionals including private bankers, financial and wealth advisors, lawyers, insurance professionals and tax accountants.
- Responsible for month-end and year-end close of financial statements, account reconciliations, general ledger analysis, and annual audits, where applicable.
- Develop, enforce, and evaluate accounting policies and procedures in conjunction with business needs. Recommend process improvements.
- Manage, motivate, and lead multiple staff across multiple teams on a daily basis.
- Contribute to management meetings to help drive the goals and objectives of the family.
- Real estate construction project management (commercial and residential).
- Provide support to family and household staff including occasional "off hours" (nights and weekends) when there are interruptions to spending or home services.
- Maintain organized records of all financial, entity, and estate planning documents in physical and/or electronic filing system.
- Assist with a myriad of ad-hoc requests with attention to detail while constantly striving to create better and more efficient practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Accounting, or Finance.
- MBA / CPA license preferred.
- 8 plus years accounting experience.
- 5 plus years managing, leading, training, and motivating multiple staff.
- Strong background with fund, management company, and partnership accounting.
- Understanding of key performance indicators for business metrics and benchmarking for portfolio analytics.
- Experience with fair value calculations among funds and between classes with different preference rights and profits interest calculations.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Proficient with financial management systems such as: Sage Intacct, Addepar, Expensify, Bill Pay, various business Point of Sales systems.
- Strong project management skills.
- Tax experience/exposure preferred.
- Experience working with high-net-worth individuals.
- Experience and knowledge of complex estate and gift transfer strategies preferred.
- Solid understanding and working knowledge of GAAP and financial statements.
- Ultra-high attention to detail, problem solver & intellectually curious.
- Adhere to the highest level of confidentiality.
- Ability to manage a variety of tasks under pressure with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to manage junior analyst, accounting and administrative staff.
- Ability to manage conflict, difficult conversations and feedback in a healthy constructive manner.
- Self-motivated, reliable, resourceful and enthusiastic with a high energy level.
- Experience with ERP implementations, interfaces/integrations, reporting and customization to Sage Intacct application is preferred.
