Director of Financial Planning & Analytics

CLIENT Our client is headquartered in the Silicon Valley and is a well-established, single family office serving the business and investment enterprises of a first-generation wealth owner / entrepreneur. The family’s wealth is the result of a highly successful technology business, as well as a significant diverse portfolio of investment, business, and real estate holdings. The mission of the Family Office is to achieve the financial and personal objectives set by the Principal. The Family Office handles the day-to-day aspects of the Principal’s life, including finance, tax, legal, treasury, technology, human resources, planning, client services and communications. The Family Office is intended to function in an efficient, reliable, and cost-effective manner, with a highly professional and productive team of employees who are collaborative, creative and diligent. SCOPE The overall scope of the Director of Financial Planning & Analytics (Director) is to support the initiatives of the Controller and Executive Director (Exec Team) by providing financial planning and analytics to the Family Office and Principal. Specifically, the Director will be primarily responsible for all aspects of forecasting, budgeting, long-term planning, and in-depth financial and operational data analysis of the Family Office. While this role will largely be a “hands-on, sole contributor” role, the Director will provide leadership and influence on the financial planning and analytics infrastructure and broader initiatives at the Family Office. The Director role will require a lot of data aggregation, consolidation, and variance analysis in addition to the ability to think into the future and weigh the various possible scenarios, including downstream impact; and then present this information within useful reports to the Exec Team, team leaders, and the Principal. The Director should have the ability to identify within the data anomalies, trends, or deviations; and then effectively communicate findings and strategies for improvements in the most effective manner. Additionally, the Director will have an ongoing, collaborative interface with the Director of Financial Reporting and Assistant Controller who both oversee the accounting operations for the Family Office. Finally, the Director will support the initiatives of the Real Estate Development and Investment Teams on an as needed basis. POSITION SUMMARY The Director will support the Exec Team and the Family Office team to execute the vision for the family office, as well as the strategic and operational infrastructure for the family entities, and to strive to instill a “best practices” philosophy in all functional areas in order to increase efficiencies, improve workflow, simplify reporting procedures, strengthen internal controls, and enhance “high-touch” service delivery to the family. In many ways, the finance function at the Family Office is a bit of a blank canvas, so this person will have the unique opportunity to help shape the vision of the annual financial outlook, design and build an analytical structure, develop a process and review structure, as well as a technology based ongoing management oversight process, which would include system templates; recalibration; monitoring; and Investment Team updates. Specific areas of responsibility will include: • Oversee the Family Office financial model, including forecasting, budgeting, multi-year planning and maintaining the rolling forecasts and planning processes and requirements across business lines. • Conduct variance analysis to report on how budget and/or rolling forecasts compare against actual performance and capital activity. • Analyze detailed financial data along with current and past trends in key performance measures to provide reliable and accurate periodic reports for decision-making purposes. • Calculate the fees (e.g., management fees, carried interest, etc.) of the Family Office. • Support the Investment Team in presenting periodic reports and visualizations of portfolio performance, risk measures and broader market statistics. • Support the Exec Team with ad-hoc, data driven analysis, as needed. • Partner with the Accounting Team to build monthly and quarterly reports for the various asset classes and businesses. • Support the Exec Team with risk management by providing dashboards to monitor liquidity, performance, and risk measures. • Support the implementation of Business Intelligence (BI) and other planning and analysis tools, as appropriate. • Be a champion by perpetually seeking ways to fully optimize the budget, forecast and analysis processes. • Establish credibility throughout the Family Office as a strong technical leader, a creative thinker, and a problem solver. • Ad-hoc special projects as needed
