Position Title:  

Director of Finance and Investment Analyst

Position Summary:

To provide financial and investment services for the principals and beneficiaries of DCA.

Reports To:

Kristine Johnston, Executive Director at DCA, and DraftCo & Associates board (7 family members).

DraftCo & Associates:

DCA is the family office for the Nicholson family located in St. Paul MN.  It is a well-established single-family office in operation since 1990 and provides the following in-house services: tax compliance, financial reporting, trust administration, investment administration cash management and bill pay and other administrative functions.   The office also coordinates the services with a network of external advisors including investment advisory, estate planning, insurance and banking.

Qualifications:

15+ years of experience in the areas of finance, tax, investments and office operations preferably in connection with a family office, public accounting firm or investment firm. 

Team player.  Strong skills in finance, accounting, tax, and investments.  Experience with private equity investments.  Excellent leadership and team management skills.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.  Proficient in Microsoft Office programs and accounting and financial software.

Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field.  Advanced degree and/or certifications preferred which may include CPA, MBA, CFA, JD, etc.

Location:

St. Paul, Minnesota.

Willing to discuss hybrid options, with the majority of work days in person.

Director of Finance (70%)

Management of Financial OPERATIONS (40%)

  • Manage and oversee the financial responsibilities for the operating office and all family entities including inhouse accounting and tax staff:
    • Banking and cash management
    • Payroll
    • Accounting
    • Financial reporting
    • Tax compliance (income tax, sales tax)
    • Operating office budgeting
    • Coordination with outside service providers for banking, insurance, etc.
  • Serve as CFO and secretary for operating company and signor on bank accounts for entities and family members
  • Prepare and review financial reports for all individuals / entities as needed for regular distribution and meetings
  • Serve on the DCA board and NIM Investment Committee

Management of Tax Compliance Process (25%)

  • Oversee the management of all aspects of tax planning, compliance, and reporting. Compliance duties are the responsibility of the inhouse Sr Tax Manager and Senior Account which include tax planning, required tax code and regulation research, preparing and signing of tax returns.  The CFO provides support to Sr Tax Manager with workflow, coordination of staff duties and top-side review of tax returns.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of tax filing requirements at the local and federal levels and contribute to the tax planning process and provide recommendations for actions to be taken by the family members.


Financial Analysis and Reporting (35%)

  • Coordinate financial reporting for committees and family members on a monthly and annual basis.  Includes preparation of financial reports for trustees, special reports for board meetings and preparation of comprehensive annual financial statements for each family member and family entity.
  • Develop specialized and new reports as needed.
  • Ensure accuracy of data in investment reporting system (Asset Vantage) and ensure reporting of financial activity is timely, accurate and confidential.
     

Investment Analyst (30%)

Primary responsibility for private equity investment administration and investment reporting on all investment including capital market accounts.  Provide investment support for internal investment committee meetings and annual meetings with financial advisors. 

Responsibilities include:

  • Field initial query for interest and perform initial review of private equity investment opportunities as requested by family members, and coordinate with outside advisors in the due diligence process.
  • Circulate investment proposals (as requested), complete subscription agreements, establish accounts (where needed), coordinate disbursements for capital calls and purchase transactions and coordinate the deposits and accounting for receipts from sales transactions.
  • Serve as the point person for each of the private equity investments and coordinate with accounting staff for the timely and accurate reconciliation of all private equity and special investments on a monthly or annual basis.
  • Review, file and circulate monthly/quarterly/annual investment correspondence for all private equity and special investments to the appropriate family investors.
  • Coordinate annual (or more frequent) review meetings with investment managers and financial advisors for the family members and all family entities.
  • Coordinate the preparation of asset allocation analysis for use in the development and maintenance of a coordinated investment strategy.
