Director of Finance

 

Organization:

We are seeking a Director of Finance to join our newly-formed family office. Our investment affiliates have over $1 billion in assets under management and operate quantitative trading systems that have produced exceptional results across a range of financial markets. Our affiliated philanthropies advance climate change solutions at speed and scale and support human rights and social and economic justice. Our family office will support wide-ranging non-profit, philanthropic and family activities as well as certain investment activities. As an employer, we are small, discreet, and highly selective. Position Summary:

The Director of Finance will report directly to the family office President and will work closely with existing investment, accounting and finance functions at our investment and philanthropic entities, as well as with outsourced tax and accounting teams that currently support the family office. An ideal candidate will have substantive accounting experience in environments processing numerous sources of data, as well as excellent training in tax and accounting. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in both independent and team environments is essential to success in this role. There is strong potential for growth over time.

Skills and Capabilities:

We seek an experienced, quantitatively talented accounting professional. Strong analytical and technical skills are a must, as is mastery of Excel. As accounting functions for our affiliates currently sit in Princeton, NJ and New York, NY, in the first 6 months the employee is expected to spend significant time with the existing teams in those locations. The position will have a permanent presence in Irvine, California.

Among other things, the role will involve:

  • Serving as a strategic partner with the family office President and Principal to build and manage the overall financial operations of the family office, including developing, building and operating a new tax and accounting platform for family entities and family members
  • Developing and maintaining a documented system of accounting and internal control policies and procedures
  • Responsibility for banking relationships and loan compliance issues
  • Preparing financial forecasts, models and analyses as requested by family members
  • Assembly and analysis of a single reporting package encompassing all activities
  • Financial statement preparation, including external audit oversight
  • Research, planning, preparation and filing of tax returns
  • Responsibility for preparation of general ledger postings and monthly closings, reconciliation of cash accounts, accounts payable process
  • Managing execution and clearing cycle of security transactions
  • Managing tasks such as payroll, benefits and insurance with outside PEO
  • Other tax and accounting matters that pertain to the entities, trusts or family members associated with the family office
  • Performing managerial and analytical special projects in conjunction with senior management

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • 10+ years of experience; some single- or multi-family office or family-owned organization experience a plus
  • CPA license preferred but not required
