Controller

We are seeking to have a Controller join our single family office. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller will assist the Chief Financial Officer in the oversight of varying financial areas within the family office including overall accounting, payroll, accounts payable, budget preparation assistance and internal financial statements. This is a hands-on position. The role requires someone who has strong collaboration skills as well as flexibility.

As Controller, you will:

  • Prepare monthly financial statements and a monthly financial reporting package for review with the Chief Financial Officer and ultimately reporting to the executive committee
  • Develop and maintain analytics for direct investments in operating companies
  • Ensure accurate processing of all financial transactions, revising and developing appropriate processes and internal controls as necessary
  • Ensure the integrity and efficiency of cash, receivables and payables management
  • Manage the accuracy and productivity of day-to-day activities of accounts payable, cash disbursements, invoicing/billing, customer credits and collections, payroll, fixed asset records, general & entity accounting, Human Resources, and Operations
  • Provide financial analysis tools to evaluate company ventures or special projects, programs, capital expenditures, products costing, etc. when necessary
  • Work closely with Chief Financial Officer in the development and economic evaluation of various fringe benefit programs for staff and program components
  • Supervise overall Operations (including: Safety, Security, Computer Services and Building Maintenance)
  • Assistance in review of  insurance coverages and preparation of insurance applications for various entities
  • Review compliance with various state sales and use tax regulations including preparation of sales tax returns and assistance with state sales tax audits
  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer in maintaining records for retirement accounts (i.e., 401-K Plan)
  • Assistance in preparing for the annual 401k audit, TPA discrimination testing and other trustee work including 5500 review
  • Assistance with preparing books and records for a Foundation including preparation of workpapers for annual review done by outside accountants
  • Assistance providing tax information required by outside accountants
  • Acting as backup for payroll input for 15 payroll centers on a biweekly basis
  • Other duties as necessary

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Bachelors in Accounting
  • 5-10 years of related work experience with assistant controller or controller experience a plus
  • CPA preferred
  • Ability to work independently
  • Have excellent communications skills
  • Have exceptional attention to detail and strong analytical skills
  • Experienced in Microsoft suite of products and most general ledgers
  • Strong Excel knowledge with in-depth knowledge of pivot tables
  • Great Plains accounting knowledge a plus
  • Paychex payroll software knowledge a plus
  • Family Office experience a plus

About this Opportunity

The financial controller will report to the Chief Financial Officer and will work closely managing a small staff and assisting the Chief Financial Officer in a family office environment. The family office has direct investments in operating companies that cross several industries and has passive investments in private equity funds and entities. Ability to grow into the Chief Financial Officer’s role and learn about multiple industries and sophisticated investments.
