The Company:

The company is headquartered in the Chicagoland area and is a well-established, private, family-controlled investment office that has been running effectively for approximately ten years. The family’s wealth is the result of monetizing a highly successful entrepreneurial business in 2010 and the subsequent development of an internally directed diverse investment portfolio. The six-person office is currently operating with expertise in the following three areas: public equities, real estate, and private equity investments through funds and limited partnerships.

The office is in the final stages of completing its second direct purchase. These acquisitions are the beginning of a Chicagoland roll-up strategy in the health care space. This business plan calls for 10-12 tuck-in acquisitions over the next 2-3 years.

The CEO/Founder is a driven, entrepreneurially spirited visionary with a history of forming, operating and managing successful service businesses.

The Opportunity

In this newly established executive position, the COO/CFO will be the lead financial management executive and report directly to the CEO. The COO/CFO will work collaboratively with the existing team and provide the financial management, operational and M&A leadership for the offices varied business interests.

The two primary responsibilities are (1) to create the direct investment process and execute on the acquisition of the targeted roll-ups and (2) to instill financial management “best practices” across all functional areas of the investment office.

This new chapter of a dynamic, nimble and flat organization provides a significant career opportunity for a leader who will have a major impact on the growth and development of this investment office.

Job Responsibilities

The COO/CFO’s responsibilities are grouped into six areas. The first two, focused on financial management and M&A, are the major requirements of the position:  

  1. Financial Management and Reporting

o Provide strategic, accurate and timely monthly financial reporting including financial statements, balance sheets, income statements, distributions, expense, and cash flow reports for all current entities and newly acquired direct investments

o Develop dashboard and other meaningful reporting across entire investment portfolio to keep the principle apprised of portfolio and investment manager performance

o Maintain and make recommendations to adapt and improve financial reports to facilitate tracking assets and facilitate decision-making within the organization  

o Implement internal cost controls and track costs for the investment office

o Provide strategic financial analysis, modeling, planning and projections

o Make ongoing recommendations to adapt and improve controls over all aspects of treasury functions

  1. M&A – Key member of M&A team selecting and evaluating investments

o Develop M&A plan and process to achieve acquisition goals of investment office

o Develop acquisition classification tool to assist in quickly identifying opportunities

o Preform operational and financial due diligence

o Formalize procedures for closing targeted direct investments

o Coordinate third-party consultants and advisor

  1. Tax/Estate Planning and Compliance

o Serve as liaison and work with internal and external tax and estate planning advisors

o Provide ongoing support for tax reporting and compliance for family members, trusts and other legal entities as needed

o Plan and report on philanthropic giving and family foundation matters

  1. Risk Management

o Evaluate, strengthen, and review the internal control environment to ensure the appropriate processes and procedures are in place to safeguard the integrity and security of all critical functions of the investment office

o Provide investment and operational risk oversight of the investment portfolios and other activities conducted through the investment office and outside advisors    

o Evaluate and periodically review insurance providers and policies to ensure that appropriate types and levels of coverage are in place

  1. Systems and Technology

o Select and maintain technology systems for financial reporting and other functions with input from internal staff and third party consultants as needed

o Oversee security of systems and disaster recovery plan for technology and operations

  1. Management Responsibilities and Human Resources

o Oversee employment practices and policies, as well as, compensation and benefits

o Hire, manage and mentor staff as needed

 

Qualifications: 

The ideal candidate has 10 or more years of work experience split between public accounting and private equity/M&A.

  • Education:  Four-year college degree required with applicable graduate degree or certification such as CPA and CFA
  • Experience:  +/- five years public accounting and +/- five years’ executing mergers and acquisitions

Compensation:  Salary, short- and long-term incentive compensation, and benefits will be competitive and commensurate with the role, responsibilities, marketplace, and experience of the individual hired.
