Chief Operating Officer / Legal Counsel
Our well-established, single family office is head quartered in Chicago and has been in existence for 20 years. The family's wealth is attributable to an operating business that was sold in 2008. The family is comprised of two generations, the father, "Principal", and his four children, that span in age from 5 to 21. The COO/Legal Counsel will support the Principal on a diverse set of business and personal interests along with the current 10 office employees and 18 household employees located in multiple states. Alongside his experienced staff, the Principal utilizes the expertise of trusted consultants in the areas of tax, estate planning, various legal matters, investment advisory, trust custody, and insurance.
This newly-created position will support the Principal in overseeing the family office operations, allowing the newly-created CFO position to focus on financial management aspects, and provide needed legal services when the person currently running the office and facilitating all legal work transitions into a more limited advisory role.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review variety of legal contracts including real estate purchase/sale, vendor contracts (office and homes), purchase/sale of plane/yacht, and investment related documents. Some projects may be done in collaboration with outside law firms with the goal of minimizing legal fees.
- Ensure risks are minimized through strict adherence of certificates of insurance for all vendors and contract labor.
- Oversee two administrative/bookkeepers in their duties of:
- Maintaining various insurance policies on employees, auto mobiles, homes, and other assets.
- Human resources for office and household employees.
- Oversight of IT department comprised of a seasoned team that provides services to the office, households, plane, and yacht.
- Oversight of Principal's two executive assistants.
- Work collaboratively with the to-be-hired Chief Financial Officer to ensure the smooth functioning of the office.
- Work with CFO and external estate planning advisors to periodically review and update estate planning documents including health POA, Will, and revocable trust.
- Oversee the day-to-day office functions.
- Develop a family office employee handbook.
- Work with office vendors and property management company as needed.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree.
- JD required.
- 7+ years of relevant legal experience.
TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience in working with high net worth individuals.
- Understanding of and familiarity with family offices.
- Diverse legal experience.
- Practical experience in supervision of professional and administrative staff.

- Must have integrity and instil confidence and trust in their abilities to handle complex and confidential matters.
REPORTS TO
This position reports to the Principal.
COMPENSATION
An excellent compensation package including competitive base salary, bonus, comprehensive medical, and pension plan.
Relocation if necessary.
