CLIENT Our client family is headquartered in the Atlanta area and is a single-family office serving fourteen households and spanning generations G2 thru G5. The geography of the family covers the US and several foreign jurisdictions. The family’s wealth is the result of a highly successful media and automotive business which continues as a 100% privately owned operating business. They family currently has 200+ entities including individuals, family and individual business and investment entities, and significant trusts and foundations in addition to multiple family properties including real estate and aircraft entities. THE OPPORTUNITY Reporting to the SVP/Head of Family Office (SVP/HFO), the CFO will work collaboratively with the existing family office team and provide the strategic, operational and financial management leadership for the family’s varied business, personal and foundation interests (entities). The Family Office is a sophisticated entity which has recently transitioned through significant changes in operations including the implementation of a comprehensive accounting platform, centralized cash management and PTC structure and governance. As a result, the position provides the opportunity for continual strategic alignment initiatives and execution. In addition, there are Family succession planning and generational transition initiatives that will need to be addressed that involve both multi-generational family considerations as well as human capital planning for the family office team. Much of this role is about strategic leadership and working collaboratively with the family and family office team to continue to build the family office structure; to deepen the education experience for the younger family members relative to wealth management and stewardship; and to insure that the core values of the family office are strengthened and remain aligned with those of the core business. Finally, in addition to operational, financial and managerial leadership experience, the family is seeking a CFO who aligns with their core values and can help to support and maintain these values throughout their related organizations. POSITION SUMMARY The CFO will work collaboratively with the family members and family office team to solidify the vision for the family office, as well as the strategic and operational infrastructure for the family entities. The individual will strive to instill a “best practices” philosophy in all functional areas in order to improve workflow, simplify reporting procedures, and enhance service delivery to the family. Family Office Management • Oversee the day-to-day operations of the family office including treasury, budgeting, audit, tax, accounting, purchasing, real estate, and long range forecasting. • Analyze operational issues impacting the various entities and provide oversight and recommends for improvement as needed. • Establish credibility throughout the family office and with family members as an effective developer of solutions to operational and business challenges. • Provide strategic financial input and leadership decision making on issues and/or initiatives impacting the organization. • Hire, manage and mentor staff as needed. Also, develop a plan for ongoing professional development of the staff including himself or herself. Provide cross-training opportunities to ensure flexible staffing. • Facilitate periodic meetings with family members and appropriate advisors, including preparation of meeting materials. • Work collaboratively with Director of Projects and Administration to ensure cohesive team operation on all cross-functional family matters. Tax/Estate Planning and Compliance • Work collaboratively with both tax and legal advisors to design and implement “best in class” planning strategies across family and individual entities. • In conjunction with the Senior Tax & Accounting Manager, serve as liaison with external tax advisers. This includes working with external tax advisors on an ongoing basis regarding tax planning strategies integrated through multiple jurisdictions in which the family is active. • Provide ongoing support for tax reporting and compliance for family members, trusts and other legal entities as needed. • Provide ongoing support and serve as liaison as needed for estate planning matters and trust administration. • Discuss and develop estate planning ideas on an ongoing basis with external advisors and work with estate planning attorney to execute approved suggestions. • Serve as a reviewer for all corporate, individual, trust, foundation and gift tax returns as needed. • Perform detailed estate and personal tax planning modeling for delivery and interpretation to family members. • Oversee trust accounting, modeling and distributions. • Experience with significant estate/executor administration process a plus. Investment Management Involvement • While this role will not directly oversee the internal investment management function, it will serve actively as a collaborative interface with the CIO and family members on these matters. • Work with the CIO to obtain relevant information that will be used in providing the family with an integrated comprehensive overview of their financial affairs and in keeping them apprised of potential current and future impacts to investments, cash flow and the needs of family members. • Work collaboratively with the CIO to provide guidance and suggestions to the family as needed, and to help ensure wise long term management of the family’s wealth. • Participate in periodic family investment meetings along with SVP/HFO, CIO and outside advisors as needed. • Actively monitor and collaborate regarding cash flow and investment management with CIO on behalf of family members. • Organize and prepare documents for quarterly PTC/Family Office investment committee meetings. Financial Management, Treasury and Reporting • Work collaboratively with the family, tax advisors and investment advisors to assess the accounting and financial reporting structure, articulate current and anticipated reporting needs, make recommendations for improvement, and oversee the implementation of the same. • As needed and in collaboration with the family office team, provide financial analysis, modeling, and/or projections for project or planning initiatives for family members and family entities. • Provide periodic financial reporting on relevant entities including income, expense and cash reports, analysis and forecasts. • Appraise family’s financial position and issue periodic reports related to financial stability, liquidity, and growth as requested by family members. • Ensure that family members have accurate, relevant and meaningful financial reports and dashboards for decision making tools. • Develop and/or maintain a reliable cash flow projection and reporting mechanism which includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs of entities. • Assist family members with financial planning, insurance, home purchases and renovations, tax guidance and other areas as needed. This includes a thorough initial review and annual reviews thereafter regarding suggestions for optimization of family members’ financial planning. • Maintain responsibility for PTC/Family Office centralized cash management operations, to include quarterly projections of all necessary cash needs across the family. Provide resulting recommendations to SVP/HFO, CIO and operating company regarding cash/investment/funding requirements. Legal and Risk Management – Tax Related • Work with internal and external legal counsel on structures, transactions and planning on various issues and outstanding legal settlements as needed. • Evaluate, strengthen and periodically review the internal control environment to ensure appropriate processes and procedures are in place to safeguard the integrity and security of all critical functions including, but not limited to, financial management, investments and cash. Family Foundation • Work collaboratively with the Director of Foundations to advise on Foundation tax and financial matters and initiatives. • Key areas of collaboration and support may include, but are not limited to: o Review accounting, reporting and compliance processes and procedures to ensure that effective internal controls are in place and make suggestions as appropriate. o Review financial and investment reports and make suggestions as appropriate. o In collaboration with CIO, review portfolio management for the foundation. General Administration • Maintain responsibility for the preparation and review of the PTC/Family Office budget, required allocations and billings across various trusts and operating entities, including quarterly reviews and communications with various stakeholders. • Manage relationships with, and oversee the activities of, outside service professionals including associated budgets as appropriate. • Develop and maintain effective and secure business systems, and work with outside IT consultants to provide safe, secure and effective information technology systems. • Develop and maintain appropriate document retention policies and procedures. • Assure timely and accurate record keeping and bookkeeping. • Consult with managers of other entities to support family members as needed. DESIRED CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will be a discreet, self-driven family office executive with broad business management experience and a range of different skills including strong strategic, operational, financial, analytical and leadership skills, and exceptional emotional intelligence. The ideal candidate will possess the following qualifications/characteristics: Skills and Experience: • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 10-15 years of relevant experience. • CPA designation required. • Background in relevant practice areas of public accounting is essential including good working knowledge of GAAP, cash basis, and tax basis accounting experience. • Exceptional technical accounting and financial reporting skills including the ability to aggregate, translate, and report on financial information; and to develop meaningful and effective financial reporting and forecasting processes, reports and systems across all organizations and entities. • Strong leadership experience in working with high net worth individuals and/or family businesses, including experience working with and supporting a family through a generational transition of wealth and/or business interest. • Exceptional understanding of and familiarity with best practices in a family office environment related to decision making, governance and operational structures. • Strong demonstrated background in tax planning with specific emphasis on generational asset transfer and estate planning as well and individual and partnership income tax. required. • Practical experience in recruitment, selection, supervision and development of professional and support staff is essential. • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Outlook/Word/Excel/PPT), and familiarity with Archway a plus. • Familiarity with individual payroll and benefit tax matters. • Significant experience in strategic planning, budget preparation and cash flow planning. • This individual will bring a familiarity with a network of professional advisors and peer contacts. This includes assessing service providers on an ongoing basis to ensure they are acting in the best interest of the family. • Must possess a strong understanding of – and appreciation for – how technology can be used effectively to improve operational efficiency. • Must be highly organized and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously. • Must be proactive, have a strong sense of urgency, and be comfortable with change. • Must be a confident, self-directed problem solver. • Must be willing to travel as needed. • Must have integrity and be approachable, respectful and instill confidence and trust in their ability to handle complex and sensitive financial and personal information both internally and externally. • Must consistently operate in a transparent and collaborative manner with a “team first” approach. LOCATION Atlanta REPORTS TO This position will report to the SVP/HFO and serve all of the family members. COMPENSATION An excellent compensation package will be designed to attract an outstanding individual, including relocation as needed.
