CEO OF SINGLE FAMILY OFFICE – MILWAUKEE

The Opportunity: The Chief Executive Officer candidate selected shall have the opportunity to assume a leadership role in an almost 40 year old organization providing wealth management services in connection with a series of trusts, foundations and other entities for a sophisticated financial family. The successful CEO will help shape and implement a 10 year strategic plan while meeting the day-to-day and longer term needs of 15 individual family clients. The candidate selected will work closely with the Chair and Vice Chair of the family’s Executive Committee as well as the non-family attorney trustee. The CEO will oversee two employees in the family office as well as multiple third party service providers.

The new CEO will lead the family office as it executes its mission statement:
  • The mission of the family office is to preserve the wealth and purchasing power of the family and support goals focused on stewardship of financial assets and the promotion of family cohesion.
  • The office coordinates investment, accounting, tax, legal issues, and risk management, with input by third party advisors, family beneficiaries and trustees, and the non-family attorney trustee. As part of that effort, the office also drives consolidated reporting, philanthropic activities, and financial planning and estate planning. The office supports the family’s education program, communications, and meetings.
  • The office aligns itself with the family’s wealth management service needs, exercises discretion, pursues a professional approach, and keeps the total costs of the holistic wealth management effort reasonable for the family.

The successful CEO will have the skills needed to help the family meet its financial goals and mission broadly defined and a predisposition to providing superior service.

Job Responsibilities: The CEO is charged with leading and overseeing the wealth management needs of the family and coordinating third party advisors. Responsibilities at a high level follow:
1. Accounting and Tax (core responsibility):
  • Effectuate and oversee accounting and reporting functions and ensuring data integrity and accuracy when generating consolidated reports
  • Execution and collaboration with a third party tax provider to prepare, review, file and manage cash flow for effectuating tax payments
2. Diversified Investments:
  •  Coordinate and interface with a third party investment strategist and underlying asset managers for diversified, long only family investments as well as a significant family real estate holding
  •  Review investment performance and analytics as part of consolidated reporting
3. Legal and Trust Instruments:
  • Understand basic workings of multigenerational trusts and other estate planning strategies as it applies to the family’s financial assets
  • Support and coordination for the family foundations (including administration and grant-making)
4. Relationship Management:
  • Synthesize and provide broad wealth management advice, in tandem with third party advisors, including creation and execution of financial plans for individual family members
  • Prepare agendas and meeting materials for effective dialogue and decision-making, including contact with individual client households, periodic interface with the Executive Committee, and semi-annual in person family-wide meetings
5. Family Office Management
  • Oversee an effective family office team using existing staff (including a tax specialist and financial specialist) and drive the budget process
  • Continuously upgrade and maintain compliance and procedures in the office and as part of working with third party advisors
  • Evaluate performance of third party advisors and put services in context of costs
  • Execute and oversee all aspects of the family office’s operations
6. Family Continuity:
  • Promote financial literacy and awareness and launch a formal family education program
  • Create effective avenues and forums for communications and plans to help promote family cohesion, under the guidance of the Chair and Vice Chair of the Executive Committee
As described above technical wealth management skills, especially accounting and tax, but also investment, and trusts, are important as well as other capabilities, such as promoting financial education and communications through enhanced reporting formats and effective facilitation of meetings. Working with family clients, third party advisors and family office staff are important.
Reporting Structure: The CEO reports directly to the Chair and Vice Chair of the Executive Committee of the family Board, with input from the non-family attorney trustee.
 
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have 10 years approximately of experience in the financial services industry including work for high net worth families.
  • Four year college degree required with applicable graduate degree or certification (such as CPA or CFP) desirable
  • Superior understanding of the tax code and accounting principles
  • Strong facilitation and communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to convey empathy as part of the service delivery
  • Service mindset and confident, collaborative, people-oriented working style
  • Well-honed analytical and organizational skills and proactive approach to serving family clients within a multi-disciplinary environment; attention to detail
  • High level of integrity and discretion
  • Willing to undertake periodic travel within the U.S. for family client meetings
