Deb Hoover served as President and CEO of Burton D. Morgan Foundation for 15 years, and during that time she played an integral role in fulfilling the donor’s vision of advancing entrepreneurship in northeast Ohio. She has also served in leadership roles for two other private foundations. Deb will share a number of practical tips for families with foundations such as clarifying donor intent and how to sustain it over time, and interaction with well-meaning family members reevaluating the donor’s original mission and vision. The conversation will also address how to execute on a complex mission, how to keep donor intent top of mind for the foundation board as new members come and go, and how to communicate a foundation’s vision to the local community and various external stakeholders. This webcast is not to be missed for families with a foundation, big or small.

By the end of this webcast, attendees will be able to:

  • Learn how to keep donor intent top of mind for the foundation board.

    Chief Executive Officer, Entrepreneurship Education Consortium

    In 2022, Deborah Hoover was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Entrepreneurship Education Consortium, the Northeast Ohio hub for university-based entrepreneurship and innovation programming and ecosystem development.  From 2007 to 2022, Deborah served as president and CEO of Burton D. Morgan Foundation, a private foundation in Hudson, Ohio dedicated to advancing entrepreneurship.  She is a three-term Candid trustee, having joined the Foundation Center board in 2014.  Deborah was instrumental in establishing Morgan Foundation’s Northeast Ohio Collegiate Entrepreneurship Program, a Kauffman Campuses℠ Initiative, to spread entrepreneurship across liberal arts campuses; and in developing NEOLaunchNET, a five-campus network of programs supporting student venture creation.  Deborah received the Northeast Ohio EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2014 in the Educational Services & Nonprofit category. Deborah earned her B. A. from Williams College, a Master’s in art history from the University of Chicago, and a Master’s in cultural history from Kent State University. She earned a J.D. degree at George Washington University, and also holds an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Baldwin Wallace University.

    Health Care Senior Analyst, Partner, RSM

    Lori is an audit partner and has served the health care industry for more than 26 years. She has led audits of hospitals, whose operations include academic medical centers, acute hospitals, ambulatory surgery centers, senior living and long term care facilities as well as community hospitals and behavioral health care organizations. In addition, her work with nonprofit organizations includes membership organizations, museums, private foundations, colleges and universities, voluntary health and welfare organizations, private schools and federated fundraisers. Her knowledge and experience includes a thorough understanding of Government Auditing Standards and Uniform Guidance. Lori is up to date with the various industry audit guides promulgated by the AICPA and other federal audit guides.  

    Lori has been instrumental in the growth of RSM’s health care and nonprofit practice, and currently serves as the Great Lakes region health care industry leader.

    Lori’s commitment to the government and nonprofit sector goes beyond her client base. She has a strong commitment to the community and currently serves as a board member and the finance committee chair of Ursuline College, an advisory committee member of the John Carroll University Department of Accountancy, and a member of the Accounting Practices Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. On a voluntary basis, she consults with nonprofit organizations on a wide range of issues, such as compliance, operational and fiscal operations, cash flow forecasting and budgeting, financing issues, internal control and board governance issues. Lori is a past recipient of the YWCA Woman of Professional Excellence. Lori served as the Great Lakes regional leader of STAR, an RSM employee network group whose mission is to promote the stewardship, teamwork, advancement and retention of RSM’s women and is a member of the Leadership Cleveland Class of 2020.  

    In May 2020, Lori was selected as a senior analyst in RSM’s cutting edge Industry Eminence Program, which positions its senior analysts to understand, forecast and communicate economic, business and technology trends shaping the industries RSM serves. These senior analysts advise clients on conditions influencing middle market leaders. Lori’sfocus is on the health care industry.

    Hilary Leav
    Director, Insights & Research

    Hilary Leav is the Director of Insights and Research for FOX. In her role, she oversees FOX’s efforts to effectively use data, analysis, and insights to support members and further industry understanding of the unique needs of family offices.

    Hilary brings over ten years of research, evaluation, and analysis experience in leadership positions to her work at FOX. Her most recent work centers on building capacity for data usage and creating and sharing actionable information and insights that can drive strategy development, improve efficiency, and increase shared understanding of complex issues. Additionally, Hilary has extensive international experience and has previously worked in operations, strategy development, process improvement, and grants management in both non-profit and for-profit organizations.

    Hilary holds her B.A. from the University of Michigan. She received her M.S. in Measurement and Evaluation from American University in Washington, D.C.
