Investors have long understood the value of seeking geographic diversification but, family offices have probably not fully appreciated what many other institutional investors such as pension funds already understand — the potential of seeking some of that diversification in India.

“India represents a consumer-driven economy, with almost 85 percent of the economy in the domestic sector. The economy isn’t export dependent and much of it is devoted to traditional business sectors serving consumers - financial services, IT services, pharmaceuticals and automobiles. A drive for inclusion in the country’s financial system has seen more than 500 million citizens, many in rural areas, open their first bank account in recent years. That’s broadened opportunities for entrepreneurship through increased access to capital, as well as expanded retail credit to encourage consumer activity and participation in the equity market.”
With global investors staring at slowdowns in developed markets and with China facing a myriad of issues that won’t be going away any time soon, there has arguably never been a better time to understand the opportunity set (and inherent risks) in India, especially for investors that are seeking growth.
The government of India estimates recent GDP growth at about 7 per cent for the one-year period ending March 31, 2023, one of the highest among large economies. An increasingly affluent young consumer class continues to drive that growth. More than 60 per cent of the country is under age 30, assuring a continued demographic dividend.
Individual Indian companies are heavy hitters. A research report from IIFL Securities, on which IIFL AMC collaborated, notes that 156 companies in India’s BSE 500 have compounded in value by 20 per cent or more annually over the past 20 years. The same could be said for only 35 companies in the U.S. S&P 500, five in China’s Shanghai Composite Index, and two in Japan’s Topix 500.
There’s a long runway ahead for India, as its sustainable growth path propels the country from the fifth to third largest economy in the world — and ample opportunities for family offices to add value to their portfolios.

Mr. Maheshwari is responsible for the investment and strategy for IIFL AMC's business and joined in 2018 with over 27 years of work experience in the financial services sector.
Prior to joining IIFL AMC, Mr. Maheshwari was associated with DSP BlackRock Investment Managers Private Limited (Blackrock's former joint venture in India) for over 21 years as an Executive Vice President & Chief Investment Officer.
Mr. Maheshwari was chief investment officer at HSBC Asset Management between December 2005 and May 2006 before returning to DSP BlackRock Investment Managers. Prior to joining DSP BlackRock Investment Managers, he worked at Merrill Lynch India Equities Fund (Mauritius) Limited and Chescor, a British fund management firm that used to run three offshore funds investing in Indian equities.
Mr. Maheshwari is an alumnus of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow.

David Toth
President of Membership
David Toth is the President of Membership at Family Office Exchange (FOX) and is market leader for FOX’s Wealth Advisor members. In his role, he serves as Co-Chair for Multi-Family Office and Integrated Wealth Advisor Councils. He also Co-Chairs the Strategic Chief Investment Officer Council, a peer group for family office CIOs.
David serves as relationship manager for select wealth advisors and families providing strategic guidance, access to essential research and offers key insights on issues of importance to them. He has authored, presented, and consulted on topics ranging from client experience and pricing strategies to talent management.
He is as a member of the FOX leadership team, helping to develop and execute strategies designed to better meet member’s evolving needs. David also participates in the development of new research and thought leadership for FOX members.
David brings over thirty years of wealth and investment management, marketing, and strategic consulting experience to FOX and its members. He held key leadership positions in the Asset Management Division at PNC Financial formulating and implementing growth strategies that helped to more than double the size of their wealth and ultra-high net worth businesses.
David earned a B.B.A. majoring in Marketing and an M.B.A. majoring in Finance & Economics from University of Michigan and the University of Detroit/Mercy, respectively. In addition, David has completed Leadership and Executive Development programs at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
